Regen GGBS - Cement Substitute
Regen GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag) is a sustainable cement alternative that enhances the durability of concrete while significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Using one tonne of Regen GGBS in concrete reduces the embodied CO2 by around 650kg, compared to using one tonne of Portland Cement while increasing its durability. Regen is more sustainable than most other cement substitutes, such as Fly Ash.
As one of the leading sustainable cement alternatives, Regen GGBS meets industry standards and delivers superior results for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects.

What is Regen GGBS?
Regen GGBS (ground granulated blast furnace slag) is a readily available, reliable cement substitute. It is produced as a byproduct of the steel industry, ensuring that it is no longer disposed of as waste but is repurposed for use in concrete production.
By replacing one tonne of CEM I (Portland) Cement with Regen GGBS, you can cut embodied CO2 by approximately 650kg while boosting concrete’s durability in certain applications. This makes Regen GGBS an effective cement substitute for eco-conscious construction contractors, builders and developers.
More sustainable than other alternatives, Regen GGBS is ideal for a wide range of construction projects. It not only strengthens and extends the lifespan of concrete but also supports eco-friendly building practices, even in demanding conditions.
In the UK, GGBS is usually supplied as a separate component for concrete and added to the concrete mixer. It can replace 70 percent or more of the Portland cement. In British Standards, GGBS is referred to as an ‘addition’ and counts fully towards the cement content in concrete.
Regen conforms to BS EN 15167-1 “Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag for use in concrete, mortar and grout” and is available throughout the UK, accompanied by a full technical and logistical support package.
What are the applications of Regen GGBS?
Regen is ideal for use in projects where sustainability and durability are essential requirements. Example applications include:
- Soil stabilisation
- Mortar
- Precast concrete
- Paving and street furniture
- Specialist projects

Regen GGBS Concrete FAQs
Find out more about Regen GGBS below, or visit our cement technical services page for product information.
- What is the appearance of Regen GGBS?
-
Regen provides a superior, lighter-coloured finish than concrete made using Portland cement-only mixes.
In particular, Regen enables:
- A lighter-coloured concrete
- Greater reflectivity, providing better visibility and therefore safety in dark environments
- Reduced efflorescence
Because of the near-white colour, Regen can be used as a replacement for White cement, with only a minimal difference in whiteness. However, for architectural applications where brightness is a critical factor, it is still recommended to use White cement wherever practical.
- Can Regen GGBS be used in all types of concrete?
-
Yes, Regen GGBS can be used in various types of concrete, including those for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. Its versatility makes it suitable for many applications, providing an effective solution for builders seeking sustainable concrete alternatives.
