GGBS EPD provides clarity on environmental performance
We have a new Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for our evoBuild low carbon GGBS cement replacement product.
The EPD, published by leading EPD programme operator EPD-Norge, provides clarity on the product’s environmental performance. It has been produced in accordance with EN 15804, a European standard for producing EPDs for construction products.
evoBuild low carbon GGBS (ground granulated blastfurnace slag) is a by-product of the steel manufacturing process. Previously known as Regen GGBS, it is an important supplementary cementitious material (SCM) and is a tried and tested option for reducing the CO₂ emissions associated with concrete. We have a safe and secure volume of GGBS for supply across the UK for many years.
“evoBuild low carbon GGBS is the best SCM available for delivering carbon reduction,” explains Nina Cardinal, Technical Strategy Director.
“It is readily available from Heidelberg Materials in the UK and is proven to also provide enhanced concrete performance through improved durability.”
evoBuild is our global brand for low carbon and circular products and all evoBuild products have clear sustainability credentials. Low carbon products must provide a CO₂ reduction of at least 30 per cent compared with global reference values from the Global Cement and Concrete Association .
Circular products in the evoBuild range must either contain a minimum 30 per cent recycled content or use at least 30 per cent less material. These evoBuild standards will apply to products in cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates and asphalt and all UK sustainable products will be integrated into the evoBuild portfolio over the next few years.
1 The evoBuild reference value is at least 30% CO2 reduction vs. the global reference values from the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) for CEM I from 2020, which translates to ≤552kg CO₂/t cementitious material and ≤ 5.5kg CO₂/m3/MPa for ready-mixed concrete.
