Locals enjoy quarry tour at Tytherington residents’ day

Over the weekend, we welcomed over 350 local residents to our Tytherington quarry in Somerset for a family friendly resident’s day.

It was a great opportunity for our closest neighbours from Tytherington and Itchington to learn more about our operations and experience the scale of the quarry up close, with guided bus tours, machinery displays, and information stands.

The guided bus tours allowed visitors to see the quarry floor and see loading shovels in action, while access to the rail loading area meant they were able to see dumper trucks and learn about their capabilities. 

Our team were happy to answer many questions from the community and we had specialists on hand to talk about the environment and the wildlife that calls the quarry home, as well as stands featuring information about our apprenticeship programme.

Residents were also able to learn about our rail linked operations, which enable the quarry to supply crushed limestone aggregate to rail depots in Oxfordshire, London and southeast of England, where there are no natural deposits of limestone.

Thornbury and Yate MP, Claire Young, attended the event along with several South Gloucester councillors, who took the opportunity to meet with both residents and quarry staff and explore the quarry.

Unit Manager, James Brown said: “Our residents’ day was a great way for the community to see behind the quarry doors and understand more about the work we do.

“There was a lot of really positive feedback from the public, many residents have lived in the area for years and never had the chance to see inside the quarry, so it was great to be able to show them around. We will definitely look into holding a similar event in the future.”
