High strength structural concrete supplied
Hanson UK is supplying high strength structural concrete for the construction of Brechfa Forest West onshore wind farm in Carmarthen, Wales.
The ready-mixed concrete, supplied by Hanson’s nearby Johnstown plant, forms the foundations for the turbines. Each base contains around 380 cubic metres of C50 concrete containing 50 per cent Regen ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). Regen, manufactured from a by-product of the iron-making industry, reduces the embodied CO2 content associated with the production of concrete and increases its durability.
Once completed, the wind farm will have 28 wind turbines with an overall capacity of 57.4 megawatts: enough renewable electricity to meet the needs of around 38,800 UK households a year.
Joseph Sheehy, regional commercial manager for Hanson Concrete, said: “This is an important contract for our ready-mixed concrete plant in Carmarthen and we are delighted to be part of such a significant project.
“Our extensive experience of successfully delivering high specification projects in remote locations is helping ensure the foundation work is running smoothly and on time.”
