Celebrating our first anniversary as Heidelberg Materials
It’s our anniversary! A year ago today we rebranded as Heidelberg Materials to align with our parent company, and what a busy 12 months it has been.
In addition to implementing the rebrand - we’ve already changed the livery of more than 1,200 of our vehicles and delivered new signage to over 70 per cent of our sites - we’ve also made some major investments in the business, welcoming both Mick George Limited and B&A Group to the Heidelberg Materials family and becoming 100per cent owners of Smiths Concrete.
We’ve opened a new recycling hub at Appleford, Oxfordshire; invested in a mobile cold recycling mixing plant to produce lower carbon cold mix materials for road construction and maintenance projects; and introduced digital solutions to make it easier and more efficient for our customers to do business with us.
In addition, we’ve continued to progress our plans to build a carbon capture plant at our Padeswood cement works in north Wales, including signing a front-end engineering and design contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Worley.
We also launched a trial using C-Capture’s solvent-based carbon capture technology as well as a groundbreaking project to establish the feasibility of using ammonia as a source of hydrogen for use as a fuel in cement kilns.
Other milestones include:
- Becoming the first building materials company to achieve certification to the updated BES 6001 responsibly sourcing standard across our business.
- Reaching the updated PAS 2080:2023 standard on managing and reducing whole-life carbon in the built environment.
- Developing revised UK sustainability commitments for 2030 and beyond, giving us clear and measurable goals to help us build a more sustainable future.
- Launching our 2024 sustainability report.
- Hosting two more Let’s Talk Sustainability webinars – covering biodiversity and the decarbonisation challenge.
- Welcoming a wide range of visitors – including school children, local residents, ministers and MPs – to our sites across the country to educate and inform about the importance of the minerals sector.
- Supported numerous community projects through the donation of time, money and materials.
- Being one of only a handful of employers to be awarded platinum membership of The 5% Club, demonstrating our commitment to offering earn and learn training opportunities.
- Launching the sixth round of our biodiversity research competition, the Quarry Life Award.
We have also enjoyed success both at a business and individual level in numerous industry awards, showcasing our commitment to exceptional project delivery and supporting our employees to reach their full potential.
